Please ID this snake in Ontario Canada
Hi, I'm new to the site. I encountered a snake two days ago that I've never seen before. I'm pretty sure I know what it is but want to confirm. It was first seen swimming across a bay of a small lake in Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park in south central Ontario and landed on the bedrock of my campsite. It hissed and flattened its neck like a cobra. Thanks in advance.

Eastern hognose (Heterodon platirhinos)...the pointed nose and the hood is a give away for this species. Even though they like to pretend they're cobras, they are harmless. They often play dead if you bother them and they're very hesitant to bite.

Re: Please ID this snake in Ontario Canada
Thanks folks. That's what I thought.
How common is it for eastern hognose snakes to be swimming in a lake?

Re: Please ID this snake in Ontario Canada
Not typical behavior IME, but all snakes can swim very well. Possibly hit the water to escape a predator, but a small snake swimming in a lake could easily become fish food.
