Kokopelli the Kenyan Sand Boa
Hello,
I'm the new owner of my first Kenyan Sand Boa, and the only snake I've ever had since 2 Garters a while ago! I've been worrying and stressing and worrying some more about specific things I can't find any information on anywhere else, so I joined the forums! (For lot's of other reasons too, I have so much I want to learn!) She's been here for just over a week. Anyway, Kokopelli is very young, and although her exact age is unkown, anywhere from 3-5 months, give or take, is my best guess. She's absolutely stunning! Her orange is surprisingly bright. I'd love to post a picture but the few pictures I have were washed out from the kitchen light and don't do her colours half justice!
Not sure what else to say so I guess that's all! (:
I'm going to post my questions right after this, so I'd love it if someone could check those out
Thanks!

Re: Kokopelli the Kenyan Sand Boa
Hello and welcome!
I've had a Kenyan Sand Boa before. One thing, they like to bury themselves and I've seen mine when the sand wasn't deep enough shovel sand over until it was. So give her much deeper sand or aspen.

Re: Kokopelli the Kenyan Sand Boa
Welcome and glad that you're reaching out for help!
Would definitely switch out to aspen, sand is rather dangerous even for a snake, if a grain gets caught in soft tissues it can cause infections, and although impaction is a lesser worry with snakes since they don't constantly lick their surroundings like lizards, it can still happen. Calcium sand is especially bad because the chemicals in it can easily become toxic, and calcium carbonate is listed as a respiratory irritant. (Not saying you're using it just a warning, as calcium sand is extremely popular in pet stores.)
Plus, aspen is loads cheaper than sand, so win win.
