Herp Husbandry Help (HA!): Living BRB/Ball enclosure?

So, after looking around a bit and finding my groove, I have decided I want to spruce up the tank I have Floyd the BRB in.

*DISCLAIMER* I well know that I goofed on a few things, like putting a snake that needs higher temps and humidity into a glass and mesh tank, as well as needing better gauges and a thermostat.... Working on all those a little at a time as I am not a rich man (yet!)


Anywho, I figure Im going to use the 20g Long tank for now, it seems to be doing fine and even tho my gauge reads a slightly lower than ideal temp, Floyd stays on the cool end most days. Hes eating well and has good shed, so thats whats important since it seems he's happy.

BUT Im bored looking into a bland tank, of substrate and moss.


My plan for Floyd, until I get a PVC setup for him, is to find a way to raise the temps some, and possibly put in a fogger deal. Once I get Floyd into a PVC enclosure, I would like to use this tank for a Ball Python, but thats in the future.


Can yall give me some ideas for how to spruce up what I have? Im thinking about going with an ultrasonic fountain fogger (google em, theyre less than $10) in possibly a small "pond" in the corner of the tank, but im not sure if thats even a good idea or not. If the pond idea sucks, I may end up putting the fogger thing in a fish tank "skull" and filling it with water.

Well, if you're concerned about humidity percentages IMO I would go with the versa top for a 20 gallon long tank. It's a folding glass top that fits squarely on top of the tank. Solves all your humidity issues and adds to your overall ambient temperatures.

Yeah, a mister won't solve your humidity issues. Without lowering air flow or changing from a bulb, a mister is not going to do much of anything. I would suggest lowering air flow and trying out some other stuff before resorting to a mister. Misters will lower your ambient temperatures even further, unless the water is kept warmer than room temp, and once the water settles the humidity will plummet. Any water the mister kicks out will eventually evaporate, but won't make an impact on your relative humidity. Not to mention, they have a high rate of failure and you could end up with a swamp from all the water dumping out into the cage. I have heard using distilled water helps, but I'm not sure to what degree. IMO misters aren't worth the trouble.

What temps are you reading? BRBs only need a gradient of 76-81F (you can go higher but only if there's room for a gradient - which I doubt you could adequately provide in something as small as a 20 gallon heating with ambient heat), I'd be surprised if you weren't getting at least that. :/

humidity is fine currently, i was more interested in doing it for the "fog" look and awesome if it helped the humidity.



The folding glass top is next on the to get list, both my local stores were out and when i got the setup, all they had was mesh so one is getting one in special for me.

Ah, in that case it would be a cool edition! Just make sure the water is kept a bit warm so it doesn't drop your temps (since you were worried about that).

If you are using some kind of fogger or humidifier to create a fog affect I highly recommend only using distilled water, tap water will mold very easily.
