Frog\Toad scenting
Hello all,
I was wondering what kind of toad\frog do you use to scent pinkies when trying to feed stubborn Hognose? I have some eggs cooking now and want to be prepped just in case I would need to scent.
Thanks

Re: Frog\Toad scenting
Any subspecies that is found within their natural habitat that you can have and legally obtain in regards to your local laws. It's definitely the quickest way to get any problem feeders on pinkies. I think this is your first hognose clutch(es) to hatch? Do you feel comfortable and confident on your feeding plans for the babies? Anything that you're unsure on?

Hey del, congrats on the eggs! The single best thing you can do to minimize refusals is to have your husbandry on point. Check and triple check your temperature zones , surface temps. Most times, hatchlings will take food when they are ready.

I definitely agree with this, but with these guys the odd one definitely needs scenting of some sort. There are a few things to try before toad scenting that works very well with this species which I would be happy to share if you run into those problems. Most of my hatchlings (probably around 95%) took unscented f/t at the first couple of attempts, year after year. The first couple years I tried to fool around using different scenting methods (salmon, tuna, chicken, chicken broth, etc.) but nothing works like quite like toad scent.

Re: Frog\Toad scenting
I definitely have husbandry correct. I've been keeping hognose for a few years but never have i bred them. I've done my research for a year before I decided to breed. I just never gotten a straight answer on what kind of toad to use. I live in California so I would most likely buy from a local pet shop or order from fauna.

Oh, without a doubt your husbandry is on point otherwise you wouldn't be successfully breeding hoggies. They must be comfortable and healthy if they are breeding for you. Congrats. As far as the toad scenting is concerned, I would say try fresh fish first from the fish market. If not, consider f/t frog legs from the fish market as a alternative. That's if you wind up needing it at all.

Re: Frog\Toad scenting
Thanks, I appreciate your time. I have two clutches in the incubator now and waiting on a 3rd. She will be laying soon. I just wanted to be prepped before they get here, if you know what I mean. All the young hoggies Ive bought over the years have been on f/t and none have refused food unless its that season of cooling them down. I'll definitely go buy some frozen Salmon and hopefully find some frog legs when its nearing hatching time which is mid Jun. I'm crossing fingers in hopes that I wont need scenting.
Thanks,

Re: Frog\Toad scenting
For what it's worth, I had a bit of trouble with my hoggie to take F/T initially. I end up scenting the pink on a bit of tuna fish just right out of the can. Just reused the can by freezing.
I'd tried on several occasions and she was only taking the tuna dunked pinks, after a couple of months she was taking unscented no problem. Might be a bit cheaper than salmon or frog legs. All the best and congrats on the cluthes!
