I'm watching Guardians of Ga'Hoole and realized how beautiful the nurse maid snake Ms. P is. Got me thinking if she was a real kind of snake or just completely fabricated, and then that lead to other cartoon snakes and if they are real.
So, anyone know what Ms. P might be? Or have other animated snakes (or reptiles) that they know are real? What about that cool lizars guy coixed by Ice T in Fern Gully?
I always thought in the books that Mr's p is a Ramphotyphlops australis (Blind snake) from her description, in the movie she has eyes though, and those do seem to be blind.. Think they added that to make her seem less scary (She has no eyes in the books, just indents i think) The lizard from Fern Gully is a Goanna, but they are not colored like that in real life as far as i know, but i never kept any goanna's.
Other animation film snakes i can think of.. Kaa from jungle book is an Indian python, (Python molurus molurus).. Master viper from Kunfu panda is a trimesurus species, but the markings don't really match a real snake. And Rattlesnake Jake Douglas (Rango), is a gun wielding Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. "I'm gonna blow so many holes in you, yer guts'll be leaking lead!!" Can't ever forget that quote.
If you want to laugh at something really stupid.. look at this trailer, it had me in tears.. The sounds alone! omg the sounds..:

Just one of my favorite animated reptile characters I always find Joanna adorable. Not sure what she is supposed to be, though. (Rescuers Down Under)

Monitors are usually referred to as Goanna's....so they called her Joanna...get it?
Most animators use inspiration of real animals. They study their look and movements to make the movies seem more real. Then they probably modify them to fit their movie or show needs with different patterns and colours.
I read that the movie version of Ms. P was inspired by the black mamba, but if I recall correctly the inside of her mouth was pink. Her colouration reminds me of some blind snakes, though, which would be more true to her character, even though her overall shape is wrong.
