Hello everyone, well, I have purchased my first Rat Snake.
I am very excited.
I have done my research, as I've have been eyeballing these guys for quite a while but I would like to hear some personal stories.
any keepers of reds, how do you house them (tank vs tub),
any tips? tricks? and of course pictures are always welcome.
p.s. I had no idea what part of the forum to put this under sorry Aaron :P

Congrats! I was just looking at them online and almost pulled the trigger myself.
It seems like due to their humidity requirements a tub would be the easiest method.
Where did you get yours?

Local guy brings stuff in all the time if we wish (KSK Reptiles I think is his company name he goes by.)
Captive Bred from Europe.
I was thinking of a tub for a while considering it is young, so its small.
Also because of the humidity requirements. Thanks for the response

they only need some very basic care which is to not get them too hot. I keep them on cypress mulch with a hide and water bowl only in room at 70-77F except for some weeks in winter when it is cooler. Good eaters, you shouldn't have any issues. Plastic boxes are fine but must have a secure lid.

Beautiful snakes, still a bit pricey though. I'm expecting the going price to drop a bit in the next few years, hopefully by then I should have the rest of my current collection better accommodated and have room for more, lol. They normally produce 3-4 clutches of eggs each year, so it shouldn't take too long for the supply to catch up/exceed the demand for them. One thing I saw when I was researching them, they aren't recommended to be handled for any length of time because your body heat can actually be too much for them. Pretty much a display-only snake, and they apparently like to hide a lot, which is one reason I don't have any myself.
So where's the pics of the new baby?

It's been stormy here so the flights across the were canceled. He'll be here this week. I don't plan on handling him much, I've heard they can be pretty active, as well as hiding alot though, so I'll probably have him in a nice tub for a bit until hes bigger.

Very nice! Congrats on him, they are neat snakes! Most of ours are in RUBs but 2 are in tanks. Don't have a problem in either, though the RUBs are a bit easier to keep good humidity in.

He's actually a little bigger than I expected so he will be getting a bigger tub in a few days. Right now he seems cozy in his hide.
