Feeder size question

We have a king snake, not sure how old he is but we've had him for two months and he's about 18 inches long. He was eating 2 pinkies every 4-5 days, but was always looking for more. After speaking with the reptile specialist at the pet store, I decided to try him on a small fuzzy. He got it down quickly, but the skull of the pinky was protruding from him, a horrible huge lump. It went away after a few hours, all that remains is a lump a bit bigger than him in the middle of his belly. I'm concerned that the protrusion may have caused some damage... am I being paranoid? Should I move him back down to pinkies again? Thanks so much for reading

Re: Feeder size question

He will be fine. Pinkies are very low in nutritional value so I would not go back to them.

Rule of thumb is to feed a mouse that is 1 to 1.5 times larger than the thickest part of your snake. There should be a good lump after feeding, it's normal.

Exactly what Pareeee said. A lump is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

Re: Feeder size question

This was not your typical lump, at first it was a horrible protrusion, it distended his belly scales and everything... poked out a lump at least a cm or a bit more. Which is huge considering he's only a few cm's in diametre himself. It was =just from the nose and skull of the fuzzy mouse... is that normal? When do kings typically move from pinkies to fuzzies?

Re: Feeder size question

Keep an eye on her. If he's still eating and pooping, I wouldn't worry. If there are digestive problems you will see it in her poop.

Probably just a fluke, maybe the mouse got turned around a bit inside.

My corn snake was on fuzzy mice when she was only about a foot long. People are encouraged to move away from pinkies as soon as possible. As long as it's between 1 to 1.5 times larger than the width of your snake.

Re: Feeder size question

He ate another fuzzy today, just your standard lump, no horrible protrusions. He got it down in four minutes, so I think he's good with fuzzies. Thanks so much for your advice guys
