Re: Does anyone know what kind of snake this is?

Looks to me like a baby corn snake (nonvenomous).

Could be a young rat snake (also nonvenomous), but I'm not that great at distinguishing baby corns and rats.

Re: Does anyone know what kind of snake this is?

My mom says it's a copperhead, not a corn snake.... I told her I thought people on this forum would know better, but she says it's a copperhead.

What are the signs that it's not one so I can let her know?

Re: Does anyone know what kind of snake this is?

Venomous snakes have really triangular heads. Kinda heart shaped and a lot bigger than their necks. I have a hard time telling corn snakes from regular rat snakes but it's one of those.

100% not a copperhead. Just because it has red/orange/copper coloration doesn't mean anything. Best way is to just tell her to look up pictures of copperheads and other snakes in the area to learn what they look like.

Also, it's common to find corn and rat snakes climbing on man-made structures. Copperheads usually won't do that.

Agree - Corn all the way. Once you familiarize yourself, you can spot a Copperhead a mile away (and a Corn for that matter).

Re: Does anyone know what kind of snake this is?

Another indication that it's not a copperhead is the fact that it's climbing. Corn snakes do that, but I've never seen or heard of a climbing copperhead. Those stay on the ground.
