Let's Talk About Poop

I love my snakes, but I'm not so found of what comes out of them, that is, their stinky poo. Some snakes stink more than others. My Rosies, Sand Boas, and Colubrids don't hardly smell at all. My Retics smell a little but it's not that bad and it goes away after you remove the poo. My boa constrictor stinks really bad, but only when the poop is present. However, my anacondas reek of some kind of evil that is just short of a rotting dead body. God do they stink. The pungent aroma does not fade after the vile substance has been removed either. I bleach their tubs and it still smells like it's there.

Please tell me, is there anyway to get rid of it? You know, the smell. I'm sure they don't enjoy it either.

Re: Let's Talk About Poop

The intestinal flora and fauna of reptiles is very aromatic and strong smelling. The gastric acids and enzymes have to be effective in breaking down the various prey items they consume. So, the digested and undigested parts that exit a snakes body will have a very pungent odor in general. You have to be vigilant in your cleaning of the enclosures. Try doing am and pm cleanings to diminish lingering odors. There is a hospital and clinic based biological waste deodorizer you can purchase online at healthykin.com. I would concentrate on the continuing cleaning of the enclosure as my main focus. The deodorizer I would use sparingly and definitely not in or close to the enclosure. Just into the air and away from the reptiles. Good luck.

Re: Let's Talk About Poop

My worst smelling snake is actually my lesserbee BP male. When he goes, it looks like a massive dog crap! And he usually half goes in his water then splashes it around and for whatever reason....it is just AWEFUL.....

One time, my mom cleaned the whole house and used deoderizer and ither good smelling stuff. She left to the store and I began to clean a poop he had left for me the night before.....I knew it smelled bad....but mom almost cried when she came home and opened the door to the smell after all her hard work to make it smell GOOD! I felt terrible aboutit and gave Moko the 'stink' eye the rest of the night.

Ps. My room is farthest from the front door...so that smelled traveled!

Also, thanks for the science lesson Albert. (Not sarcasm I swear!)

Re: Let's Talk About Poop

Is it weird that I wish my rainbow boa's poop stank more? I can hardly smell it at all, which means I have to actively search for poop daily.

If I miss one....MOLD

Want my answer for that? Bioactive Plus rainbows look absolutely (more-if thats possible) amazing with some good plants and leaf litter and what not.

Out of my white lip, my retic and my two rainbows, and the two BCI I had before, my retic is by far the smelliest snake I have. Possibly worse than all combined. Doesn't matter how clean I keep his tub...
