Snakes don't have any visible ears, but they have internal ear parts resembling those of other animals that pick up on vibrations just like our ears do. Since the vibrations have to go through flesh to get to a snake's "ears", though, it's likely that they can only detect very low frequency sounds from the air. Sounds transmitted through solid surfaces that the snake is in contact with would be "heard" more clearly than airborne sounds. Next time your boyfriend wants to talk to your snakes, tell him to speak loudly or in a deep(low frequency) voice, or use one of those tin-can-and-string phones to talk to them :P
