King snake questions

Hi everyone! I'm new to the world of snakes and I'm looking into getting a king snake (I won't be getting one for a long time but I want to be prepared) so I have some questions
1. What are the differences between the species (subspecies?)
2. Are they good first time snakes?
3. Is it better to get a snake from an online breeder or a local breeder?
4. What are some pros and cons?

Welcome and best wishes. I don't know the verifiable differences between subspecies but I believe kings make awesome first snakes. I think they're really easy to care for, they come in some beautiful morphs, they grow to a decent size and they're usually great eaters. I can't think of any cons to keeping them. They can be a little flighty and defensive when they're young but many snakes are. My kings are both sweet as pie. I acquired my Cal King from Petsmart and my MBK from Reptiles by Mack both are amazing but I'd recommend buying from a reputable breeder. I love my kings!

Before buying a reptile from a large box store, please attend a local reptile show and support private breeders. You will know more about the specific snake and actually be able to ask the breeder specific questions. Not all venders at shows will be able to answer these questions, as some people buy and resale whatever they can. (just my .02 worth)

That depends on the time frame, cost, and availability of what you are looking for. I got mt snake and a few if my geckos from online breeders. Likewise i have also purchased geckos at a convention as well as a pet store. It depends on your individual needs and expectations. I bow prefer purchasing from online breeders as there are good deals and more selection. Might be a bit more expensive than a store or local breeder, but I know I am getting exactly what I want (which is important to me). However, I am waiting for a convention this year to see what they have before I order from online again. If they don't have what I want, then I'll just hop online and grab a deal on what I want. =)

Pet stores are not usually recommended due to care issues, but honestly, I have never had an issue with any of my store bought reptiles and I am lucky to have stores that are clean with knowledgeable staff. =)

I...don't know, honestly! I only have one.

I think so, yes! Uncomplicated care, good eaters, manageable size.

3. Is it better to get a snake from an online breeder or a local breeder?

Local would be nice (no shipping!), but you might not be able to find one. Everyone in my area seems to breed balls, carpets, balls, balls, carpets, boas, or balls. For some variety, there's also a few who breed balls. Online's fine if that's what you find, and you do some googling around first.

4. What are some pros and cons?

Some have been mentioned already--um, if they have a crazy feeding response that can uh, startle some people. SUDDENLY, LAUNCHING SNAKE.

1. What are the differences between the species (subspecies?)

- Between King and Milks, theres more similarities than differences. Corns are very similar as well. Between Kings and Milks, they will both typically grow 4-4.5' with a max length of 5-6'. Kings usually get a birth more girth than length while Milks generally get more length than girth. Both readily accept at feeding time and require little maintenance. Milks are more flighty and seem to tend to musk more when young while Kings can be a bit more cage defensive while they are young. Of course patience, aclimation, and moderate handling will take care of those issues.

2. Are they good first time snakes?

- In my opinion (as well as many others), Kings and Milks are the best starter snakes.

3. Is it better to get a snake from an online breeder or a local breeder?

- Supporting local shops is always great, but make sure you trust them. Be sure to check the snake for any mites, injuries, or skin problems. Check for mouth infections as well. If you cant find the one you want locally, I highly suggest BHB Reptiles for an online choice.

4. What are some pro's and con's.

- None, Kings and Milks rock. Do see answer to #1 for potential issues while the snake is still young.
