Snakes eat rotting food all the time. This is not a big deal.
I've seen/known a few people who have fed roadkill. I don't condone it as you just don't know what exactly killed or the animal might be carrying but to each their own.

What do they care? I think they prefer any meal over not eating. I don't think they are picky when it comes to survival.

Re: mini rant
Not saying its great to feed your snake roadkill but I've seen much MUCH worse things done to animals.. Like the tortoise that was set on fire, or all of the dogs and cats used as bait for dog fighting. There are much worse things that I'm leaving out.

Re: mini rant
we got mountain folk that'll eat roadkill if it's still warm around here. Mostly ground hogs. We call them whistle pigs and make banjo skins out of their hides

Hey, if I saw a deer freshly killed on the road you bet I'd take that sucker home and make delicious tenderloins out of it. Deer is some good eats. We got others around here that will eat 'possum stew'. I personally love and respect opossums, so... I mean, I love all wildlife, but I'd definitely take a fresh killed deer.
Anywho, reminds me of those brats that tortured that poor gopher turtle and crushed it to death... There is so much wrong in the world. I watch plenty of pages for wildlife/pet protection and seen some terrible things. Like a Chinese butcher chopping a stolen family pet alive for the dog meat trade. Someone finely decided to stand up for the family dog, who recently had pups, by offering to buy her if he'd stop, but the butcher declined saying he had to butcher her alive for 'freshness'... Vile people.

Rotting food may not be as nutritious, but snakes have no problem eating rotten food.

Please don't think I'm arguing or disagree with your thoughts on this subject. But most parasites and diseases that mammals have, will not transfer to reptiles if eaten. On the other hand a snake eating a sick reptile, like a lizard, will transfer the illness or parasites to the snake.

I agree. I would be more worried about what the animal injested prior to its death, not diseases (which would pose more of a threat my own health). Same issue with using wild rodents - how do you know it hasn't eaten rat poison or other dangerous chemicals which could then pose a threat to your snake?
