Initiated into the world of herps

Hey everyone

I feel it's now official. I've own my first herp for only about 2 weeks, a juvie male firefly ball python. I've held him a few times and he is pretty relaxed. Last night while he was stretched right out across my lap watching TV I feel liquid running down my side. Little bugger was extremely comfortable laying on me he relieved himself. Didn't have any shame once I put him back in his cage either and started moving around it instead of hiding.

Don't start lol I'm already thinking about what I'll do in a few years when I will probably buy this little guy a new cage. I was told most BPs are very shy and don't like big cages but this guy seems quite active. Then I'd have an empty snake cage just sitting there.........

Lol you aren't the only one! Come march when repticon visits me, my girl will be out of her starter and into a new, larger tank, freeing up the smaller one which will be begging me for a new baby XD (hopefully a hognose or garter!)

I'm already researching my next one........my BP seems to be a pretty active guy so when he grows I'll upgrade him from his current 2x2x1 to a 4x2x1 which would leave his old home all empty lol. Right now I'm looking at a children s python and it seems perfect for me, you combine the best parts of pythons with positives of corn snakes. How can you turn down small size to fit your cage for life, cool patterns, bolder more active temperament while still being calm to handle vs constant escape mode. Less than 3 weeks of ownership of my first snake and I'm planning number 2. only fed this guy 3 times but all successful. He was moving in his hide before I got the rat out of the box and into the cage.

Not sure how old yours is but mine is a year and a half I think and when I first got him he was always out and about roaming, lounging. Now that I'm used to his maintenance and managing his temps/humidity, he's much more inclined to stay in his hide and then barely peek his head out of his hide and stay there until he gets fed. He'll come out at night for about 30 minutes and roam around if he's hungry. Other than that he's pretty much just in his hide. In fact I'm convinced that the only reason he changes hides is he craps in one and moves to the other. Then he'll crap in that one and move back to the other one lol. (i clean them of course but its an odd pattern ive noticed).

Anyways rambling. Point is, i keep him in a smallish glass tank and just ordered a new pvc cage that is only I think 36 inches long. Its 3 inches taller and quite a bit deeper and like 6 inches longer than what i have now. I think he'd use more space when he comes out but he comes out so little that I couldnt justify the extra cost. My next snake (whatever that is) will likely get a larger enclosure

Re: Initiated into the world of herps

Mine is just a young juvie, I'm not sure how old. I'll have to ask the store next time i'm in. He was 266g when I brought him home. I'll probably roll the dice and order a larger enclosure. While researching what size I've read that many people have had more active BP if the enclosure is larger. I'll end up putting a childrens python in his current home so both will have space to move.
