Anti-Venom
I was bored so I was looking around at Venomous snakes and whatnot. Look at what some of you keep I was wondering about Antivenom. I know CroFab is used for a number of snakes, but those of you that keep Cobra’s, Adders and other species. Do you keep a personal supply of Anti? I wouldn’t think many hospitals would have say Cobra anti in stock.

We have a venomous specialist near by that stocks most of the antivenom that I would require. Stocking your own would be very expensive and it out dates quickly. Also antivenom is not something you should try to administer to yourself.

A lot of venomous snakes don't have an antivenim. So those keepers have to be extra careful.

Out of curiousity, do you pay them to help offset the cost of the antivenim? In case you ever need your life saved. Or is it fully on their dime?

I guess if you live close to a big city the Zoo would have most Anti's?

I see were this question is going. No I do not pay them. It is their business and why they charge so much if they have to use it on me. I also don't pay hospital to have the equipment to use on me if I have a heart attack. My one and only venomous bite, I paid for every vial of antivenom that I used.
Just as in my business of heating repair, no one pays me to keep all the parts on my truck to repair their heating systems, they pay me for them when I use them.

A Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Totally my fault, a beginner mistake, short cutting safety procedures to make things go faster. I paid the price both by losing part of my thumb and a 60,000 medical bill.

This depends on the zoo and their animals. A good number of zoos refuse to keep venomous snakes for a multitude of reasons all coming down to $$
You would also need to talk with the zoo to see where they get their supply. I can't imagine many zoos or hospitals keeping a supply on hand. They would though have a plan in place to be able to access the anti-venom in the event of an emergency.

Re: Anti-Venom
derek...you can't get crofab just because you want it. it is a usp product. gotta have a physician order to dispense it. besides, it's all crazy $$$..... and as jerry said, it is something that you would have a very tough time administering yourself.

Re: Anti-Venom
Didn't mean to make it sound like it was something you would administer yourself. I was thinking of taking it to the hospital with you. But I didn't know it expired quickly either.

A buddy of mine got bite by a Copperhead working in his garden. His bill was about the same. Crazy.

I fell off the horse, but had to get right back on. Only I learned from my mistake and by the grace of God it will never happen again. We all have to die someday, and if this is what kills me, I'll die doing what I love. (Not trying to sound arrogant).
