looking for red ackies!

hey everyone first time poster, I apologize if I am breaking a rule or anything right off the bat! I am interested in purchasing a pair of red ackies as I read it's better for them to have another companion, I don't care about mating and making $ or anything if that information is untrue i'll be happy with just one, so far.... I have a animal plastics 72Lx24Dx24H on the way, a retes stack I made myself, I had a 8.5 inch hole made in the cage for a basking light, fluorescent light attachment with uvb(I know this is debated if needed but I figured it cant hurt), plenty of hides, water dish, thermostat, etc... I've done quite a bit of research and I think im on a good start. I'm looking and asking now before I have set up as it appears its kinda tough to find some baby/juvi ackies out there so i'd like to get on a list or find a breeder who is about to have some in the near future. Thanks for your time reading this and I appreciate the help!

Re: looking for red ackies!

Unfortunately that cage really won't be suitable for an ackie. Although the size is fine, there really aren't any commercially available cages that can hold the amount of substrate ackies need. They should be given at least a foot of soil to dig burrows in, and I doubt that cage could hold that. It's also worth mentioning that it's better to have the basking light inside the cage rather than outside. If it's outside it will suck out all the humidity.

Re: looking for red ackies!

Houssam Istanbouli has red hatchlings for sale right now. You can contact him on facebook for find his post *Houss* on fauna in the monitor section. Also, unfortunately, everything pirarucu said is true. The animal plastics cannot hold the amount of substrate needed for this species. If you did buy a gauranteed male, and only a male, then you might be ok, although its still not preferable to not have substrate. And lighting inside the cage is a must in order to A. get basking temps where they need be without a crazy wattage bulb and B. keep humidity up by not having a hole in the top and not using crazy wattage to fry the air. That issue is an easy fix though, just feed your wire through the whole you've made, and cover it with a piece of plexi and let the light dangle by the wire down to the desired length.

Re: looking for red ackies!

Piraucu your right so I exchanged for a 72x24x48 and I am going to attach a 6 foot board 12 inches tall inside the cage against the glass so I can put the 12 inches of substrate. Also the light going over the hole with screen is the exact of the light fixture so the humidity really won't 3scape
