My recommendation; DO NOT allow location.

The MOST important aspect of wildlife preservation is to protect the animal, insect, fish or reptile and their natural environment.

May not matter much with fish or insects... and animals are protected from hunting regulations... but still need to maintain their secret locations, especially if they are abundant in population.

However, reptiles are CERTAINLY are very-very important to maintain their locations hidden. Some of us are field herpers and we are sensitive to the natural environment of our finds. Broadcasting exact locations will bring poachers interested in catching, then selling various highly sought after species.

The location of finds I produce are known only to me and my wife... together we seek rattlesnakes, photograph... take video... and release them back to their natural habitat exactly where we found them, unharmed..

Please DO NOT allow locations in your application.

General location as in southern CA, East Coast, Florida Everglades, Sierra Mountains etc will probably suffice.

That's a great point! Wouldn't have initially thought of it in such a manner.

Can any one show me a site that collectors have destroyed I've hunted for over 50 yr .im stil finding snakes in the same spots as idid in the 60s habit destruction is the biggest dab
Danger as far as releasing snakes back into the wild .there been studies on why you should not telling someone where you found something dose not ensure that they are safe

Thought so snakes are were you find them I could tell where to look but you would still have to find them.i see no harm in giving locations out the next person has just as much chance of finding as any one else

I field herp for rattlesnakes, and some of my finds... the rattler has a home. I can go back a week... a month or two later and the rattler is still there.

Once I have caught them the first time... I do not need to handle them again. However, if it's been awhile, I may want to re document that rattler.

I am very new to field herp... this my first year... started in April of this year.

There are couple experts I am in contact with via internet that give me great insight, suggestions and recommendations what do do, what not to do etc.

One recommendation is to NOT handle the homestead rattlers often, yearly to re-measure etc for personal study is fine. However, constant handling causes them great alarm and they will move.

I worry about poachers who catch and sell... also there are some folks like to eat rattlesnake. Well, that's fine and well... they need to go find their own.

There is one site I report in, they do allow entering the location... and it's up to you if you want to disclose the exact coordinates, or not. General location i.e. the State and County are always shown... again, NOT the GPS coordinates, that information is up to you to disclose, or not.

Please... for the safety of SOME species... please give the field herper a choice of whether to disclose the GPS coordinates, or not.

Location is a great idea... for frogs, turtles, lizards etc... but people eat frogs and turtles too... so... just saying. Disclose GPS location, think about it please. NOT for all finds... like homestead rattlesnakes.
