Cobra day

During my last Venomous training class I decided to get some pictures of 2 of my larger Cobras. I do not encourage anyone to try and hold or do what I do with any venomous snake. I have over 30 years of experience and use safety equipment.

Monocled Cobra in a temporary holding container.

Re: Cobra day

Awesome photos of a really beautiful and regal looking snake. That said, please be VERY careful. I realize that you've had 30+ years of experience, but sometimes extensive experience and self confidence can lead to complacency which leads to small errors...

Years ago when I lived in Miami, I visited the Serpentarium and got to meet and speak with Bill Haast. While I was speaking with him, he mentioned that he had been bitten by a cobra on his thumb the day before. He had to take two aspirin and lay down because it gave him a headache and put a Band-Aid on the bite. He was arguably the most experienced venomous snake handler in the US, possibly the world at the time and he still got tagged. All I saying is please be very careful when handling your beauties.

Thanks for the advice and concern. Bill was an experienced handler, but not a careful one. He was bitten 172 times. I admire what he did for venom research, but would not consider him a good example for how to handle snakes. I do have to admite I have learned a lot from him.

I got them years ago from Midwest supplies, but they no longer sell them. You can order them from the UK as Venom Defender gloves. The glove are not 100% guaranteed bite proof. You must train and learn how to handle venomous snake and not depend on a pair of gloves to protect you. The gloves are a secondary precaution in case you get bit, it may stop the bite.

Aside from the physical issues caused by venom related tissue damage, I always wondered if he had reached the point where venom could no longer kill him.

More on topic, your cobras are absolutely beautiful. I always admire the hots I see on this site(or any site, really) even though I doubt I'd ever keep anything more than mildly venomous. You have some gorgeous animals and I enjoy being able to see them.

True about these gloves not being a substitute for good technique. "Luke" who developed the gloves sold as Venom Defender was bitten on June 29, 2011 by a King Cobra and died within minutes from heart failure.

Not his first bite either.
