Super Dwarf Retics

I have been looking on this thread for information on pure super dwarfs. I couldnt find much though. Maybe the threads were too far down and i became too lazy. I am fascinated with Retics and want to experience their nature and personality without jumping to the biggins just yet. I was wondering if anyone knew of any reputable breeders for pure super dwarf. I forget what island they are from thats why i refer them to SD. Also any advice for this type of retic in comparison to others will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

You can probably find one from Bob clark, I'm pretty sure he breeds them but you will also pay primo price because of his name, have you tried fauna classifieds yet, should be able to find one there easily.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

Travis kubes is one of the go to guys on pure sd localities. If I remember correctly, pure males can be bought for around $350-400.

Thats not too bad at all actually. I like a lot of the pure looks these retics have to offer. Ill eventually get into bigger ones with the beautiful morphs but i want to learn their behavior first with the smaller guys.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

Travis is a reputable breeder of retics. Also Kris Brown of Vital Exotics has amazing animals as well, Kris is a member on this board. I have a 50% SD from Bob Clark, I do not know if he's working with pure SD or not.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

kris over at vital exotics have many very nice retics from all sizes. I have been eyeing a few but don't have the space yet. also reptileexperts I believe has a vast knowledge of many.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

Okay sorry long day at work. I got your pm earlier just couldn't get on til now.

Pure locale dwarf and super dwarf Retics are by far my favorite animals to keep. I've got a pair of jampeas and a pair of kalatoas and love them to death. Locales are becoming harder and harder to find(whith a few exceptions), and are at great risk of dropping off completely from the US pet trade if import laws are passed.

Dwarf retics:

Selayar- from the island of selayar, south off the coast of Sulawesi. These look very similar to the Sulawesi retics. Crazy patterns, incredible colors, some of the best looking retics in the world. They are considered dwarf by some and mid sized by others. They usually fall in the range of 10-16 feet.

(True dwarves)
Jampea- these originate from the island of tanahjampea, just south of Sulawesi(where some true giants grow). These are one of my favorite retic locales. Tons of personality, completely insane feeding response(so much so they arnt recomended as a first retic even though they are dwarves). Jamps usually fall in the 8-12 foot range but have gotten to 17 feet( Jason gaspars). I have a female that i got from bob clark, turns out shes a gaspar line jamp and ill be amazed if she gets over 12 feet.

Kayuadi - from the island of kayuadi(gets pretty predictable, I know). Kayuadi is within eye sight just north of tanahjampea; and as expected the kaydu's are very similar to the jamps. These top out a little smaller then the jamps. Usually in the 8-11 foot range, but I've heard of 14.

Halmahera - honestly not possitive exactly where these go on the size scale. I haven't seen any adults yet, but they're said to get about 8-10 feet long. These things are BEAUTIFUL, just incredible looking Retics. I really can't tell you much about these as I haven't found any info on them I trust.

Super dwarves

Madu- aka "honey island". Honey island is the translation of the island of madu. These are hard to find pures in the states(as are most of the dwarves), can't speak for other countries. These typically top out around 6-9 feet, 10 at the extreme.

Kalatoa - from kalatoa. the smallest of the known retics, and the original super dwarf retics( name coined by Bob Clark and Mike Wilbanks. The importer didnt tell them where they came from for several years. Bob later found out and I've heard it from his mouth.). These look very similar to madus with more red as opposed to yellow pigment. Adults typically range from 5-8 feet. Travis kubes has some of the best pure kalatoas. I got my pair from him. He said the females typically top out 7-7.5 feet. But can hit nearly 10 feet.

Now as far as getting one a pure kalatoa from Travis kubes is your only sure thing. I asked him earlier this week and he's got some in the oven now. Expect $350 a male and $500 a female, or like $750 a pair. Depending on your budget he should also have some pure kalatoa anery hatchlings soon. Bob Clark no longer has pure locales as of the last few times I've called to inquire. Vital exotics doesn't anything other then mainland crosses(incredible stuff that stays small if pure isn't a necessity) and maybe kalatoas(it's been awhile since I spoke with him).most of the big names arnt working with pure stuff anymore cause morphs get more attention. But Travis breeds pure every year.

As for the other locales; WC or farmed imports that have been properly treated for internal and external parasites are the only option. I do know of a few people(myself included) that will have CB pure dwarf locales in coming years but none this year. The go to people for imports are Rodney Boalich and Aubrey Pruitt. they are the 2 to talk to when it comes to pure locales(not just dwarves). Dan at DM exotics gets in some WC imports sometimes aswell, and treats them for parasites.

As far as differences between mainlands and their dwarf cousins, not much. A little flighty, constantly trying to climb, jamps have crazy feed responses. For the most part you do get a big retic in a small package.

Hope this helps.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

Awesome post Sublimeballs. You know anyone who breeds Selayers? I'd love to find a male.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

Thanks, its easy to talk about these animals theyre awesome snakes. Do you have a female??? I'm waiting to hear if there's any he can grab when Aubrey Pruitt orders another shipment from Indonesia. The next retic purchase I make is going to be either a pair of selayars or halmaheras. It's a tough choice. I do know of someone that will be producing some cb pure selayars possibly next year if things go well, but he told me not to say much about it.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

No I don't have a female. Ohio's laws are ridiculous and any snake over 12' requires a yearly permit and $250,000 insurance. I'm comfortable with a male staying under this size. I have a buddy that has all his permits if size became an issue, but I'd rather try to avoid that. A female has too high of a likelihood to surpass that size limit. I'd like to find cb so that I can find out the size of the parents and determine if it's likely to stay under 12'.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

Have you looked into the halmaheras? They're supposed to stay in the 8-10 range and look similar to selayars. Check them out. But selayars are so cool. I wish I had all the space and help to keep one of every locale. The sulawesi Retics are a dream of mine that I can't see happening anytime soon.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

No I'll check them out. I love the look of the Selayer locality. Sulawesi is my favorite but I doubt that will become a reality anytime soon. But Selayer looks like a mini Sula.

Re: Super Dwarf Retics

No problem guys. The OP sent me a PM asking for info on the locales so I thought I'd put a little bit up for everyone to reference.

I know exactly what you mean about selayars being mini sulas. But the halmaheras I've seen in person looked even more like sulas. Here's a pic of one I saw at the last reptile show. I wanted to leave with this guy but he was t for sale. I did almost leave with a 50% selayar sunfire 66% het genetic stripe but I fought the urge in favore of a halmahera or selayar becoming available in the future.
