Question Any scrub python owners here?

Thinking of getting a pair of scrub pythons, I know they have a hell of a striking reach and are really nippy as babys, also heard they tend to spray when there nervous. I also know there intelligence is up there with retics and can be a really unpredictable snake. Anything else I should know about this snake, doesn't seem like to many people keep them as a lot of the adults tend to be ill tempered. Just trying to get as much info on this species before I make a decision or lack of a poor decision that I may regret.

Re: Any scrub python owners here?

I plan on getting a muloccan python(formerly muloccan scrub) or one of the smaller scrub subspeices later this year regardless of their reputation. It's a species that I've wanted to work with since I was a kid. While I can't speak from experience ,you've heard the bad about scrubs and seem to be still interested. If you don't mind having a possibly satanic snake; why not get a female(as they are typically smaller and worst case easier to resell) and see if you like them.

should I get them (which at this point I'm pretty sure I'm going to) I would never sell them due to temperament, that's just something you take on when you get an animal like this, If I thought it would be to much I wouldn't even attempt it. I'm sure in about 2 months I'll look like a junkie from all the bite marks but I'll wear them proudly lol, just sucks to have to wait till around September but I'll have plenty of time to get the cage finished I suppose. I'm just trying to see if there is anything else I should know about them that I don't already know.

Re: Any scrub python owners here?

I own a Moluccan scrub... my only advice is get them as baby.. they are easy to get going just like a carpet and it will give you plenty of time to get to know your animal before its size make it dangerous. I find that they grow faster lenghtwise rather than girthwise during the first 2-3 years. Mine is pretty tame outside the enclosure. Also, like a retic, assume the animal is still in feed mode for a couple of days after it was fed. By far one of my favs to work with! As soon as I enter the snake room, my girl spots me from afar and watches my every movement.

yeah I was no doubt going to get them as babies, I have a guy about 4 hours away that I have been in contact with that breeds them, can I ask what size tank you have yours in, I was thinking like 6 foot long, by 30 inches wide by 6 foot high would be ok for a final tank?

I had some kinghorni many years ago. Not much different than a carpet python....just bigger.

Re: Any scrub python owners here?

The bigger the better as they are a really active species. My girl is about 5ft and as big around as a small carpet python. She is currently housed in a 4-2-2 pvc cage but will be building a custom enclosure this summer as she is going through a growth spurt atm. She is 2.5 years old and got her as a hatchling. Make sure to keep them lean and muscular, lots of people tend to overfeed assuming their able to take it no problem since they're considered giants. Yes they can take very large prey items but overfeeding a scrub can lead to an animal with a small head compared to body size. Not sure how true this is but its what i've read on moreliapythons.com. You should check it out there is a section dedicated to scrubs of every locality and a lot of long time scrub keepers on there. Also, when it reaches its adult size, i'd recomend switching from perches to platforms. Getting an angry scrub off the platform rather than the perches is going to make your life a whole lot easier when cleaning.

Re: Any scrub python owners here?

Very interesting, how much do you usually feed yours and how often, I've always feed most of my snakes every 7 to 10 days a rat about 125% of the biggest part of there body, just enough to give them a little bulge. Obviously Burms and retics got bigger meals but in general that's how I usually feed.
