Just Starting Out

Hi all! I am just starting a build for a California King Snake and I wanted your opinions.

The tank is a 30g fish tank. It will have a plantation soil base. Also, the plant pot has been moved to the center of the tank and a Tupperware pond has been added to the that side. The background will be done with Great Stuff and covered with grout. There is a heat lamp for which ever side would be best (your opinion needed here).

Does it look sufficient? Have I missed anything? Is there anything I didn't take into account? Thanks for looking!

Re: Just Starting Out

Welcome. Where in Canada are you? What are your plans for a lid?

Re: Just Starting Out

The lid will be a locking screen lid. Just need to pick it up.

I was thinking of putting a Dracaena of some sort into the pot. Or maybe something else. Something tallish and sturdy. The pot is to protect the roots. I may also plant some pothos directly into the substrate.

I'm glad you mentioned a second hide! I wasn't even aware that a snake needed a second hide to be quite honest. All of the people I know who keep snakes only have one. We will work a second hide into the design. My husband wanted to try putting a cave into the background with the Great Stuff, kinda like a tunnel...

And I am in Windsor, ON. I keep many other tanks, but this will be my first snake. I am also currently building a 120g dart frog tank (and I LOVE the way it is turning out), and a 30g tank for a Mississippi Map Turtle (my cousins). I also have a 90g community tank (still needs a ton of plants!!!) with an Angelfish, Penguin Tetras, Red Minor Serpae Tetras, Kuhli Loaches, a Dojo Loach and some cories and plecs. A 40g long with 2 Jack Dempseys which we hope are a pair (one is EBJD). A 55g with a trio of Green Terrors (Mamma, Daddy and daughter). A 20g with a male Betta, Cherry Barbs and Cherry Shrimp. A 5g with a male Betta and a couple Cherry Shrimp. A 10g hospital tank. A 5g bug growing tank. A 2.5g Cherry Shrimp tank. And a 30g vivarium with 3 Fire Bellied Toads. And of course 3 cats to watch all of this activity.
