Re: poor monitor
that's was so f*cking cruel, i only watched up until the dogs were dragging it about, one with its tail the other snapping away
i realize it's a completely different culture to us that filmed it,but to show no compassion for such an intelligent lizard is hard to stomach
cheers shaun

Re: poor monitor
No, he needs to be dropped off naked on Komodo. A bullet is way to humane. I understand some people kill animals unnecessarily due to fear, ignorance, etc... but I don't understand making them suffer. It's obvious he could have called the dogs off at any point and the monitor would have simply ran away. People make me sick.

Has nothing to do with culture. Things like this happen everywhere in the world. For example in the states many people will shoot or bash a snakes head in without any hesitation. I once saw a video of Australians boxing and knocking out kangaroos for fun.
I would not attribute any of that behavior to being part of a different culture.

Re: poor monitor
From a youtube comment
"They are speaking Thai. They are saying, "pah-leaw" to the dogs, which means, "enough". They aren't teaching the dogs to kill, they are telling the dogs to stop. However, they are also too afraid to go near the lizard to stop the dogs from killing it. It wasn't done out of cruelty or entertainment. From the looks of it, these people live along a canal & the monitor just wandered into their shop. Rather common occurrence here. I've caught ones twice this big in my yard."
I would say it's a fair assumption they weren't exactly having fun watching the monitor getting mauled. And I wouldn't blame them for not intervening, I know many people who would not go near a corn snake. Non herp-people do not see reptiles the way we do.

Re: poor monitor
Yes, I posted it not to point out the cruelty of the people as I had a few assumptions in my mind too before getting the translated comment.
I know that to most people monitors are monsters that's why fear plays a big part in this video. I did not know how scared people are until I started showing off to friends/family of how cute and cool my lizard is only to get comments like, "Scary! That's just not for me..., It's so ugly!" etc , when I had thought I'd get comments like "Wow that's so cute!" lol.
Anyways, I fast forwarded to the end of the video and looks like the monitor was killed by the dogs, that seemed like a painful death. It's like a human getting killed by a couple of lions.

Do we know that is their reptile, and not something that wondered in from outside?

Re: poor monitor
damn I just wanna kick the owners (someone is gonna say that is evil too) but those dogs are not normal, my dog would back off those are some pissy small rats who deserves a kick in the rear (owns 3 dogs) a dog bark as a warring snaps a little and when the lizards walks off they should be normal and do the same those rats have no brain + the owners makes a mess of the whole thing - makes my blood boil.

Re: poor monitor
I have a 106 pound mastiff / ridgeback mix who has a strong prey drive. If my dog was attacking that monitor, I'd first try to call him off. If he was too excited to listen to me, I'd get a long stick and, in a controlled way, get it between him and the monitor to get him to back up until I could grab his collar. If I had to smack my dog to shock him into stopping, I would. The thing is, in the end my dog knows I'm the boss.
The thing that I would NOT do is to film the killing. This person did just that and then posted the video. Scared or not, this in itself shows that this person is ignorant and complacent. Concentrating on filming the horrible scenario doesn't leave resources to stop the scenario. What a cruel thing to do. I do not blame the dogs - it is their instinct.
