Having leather in tank..

This might be a ridiculous question, but since getting my new enclosures built, my milksnake, who is an expert escape artist, has escaped multiple times. Once from the hole where his heatpad wires run through, and a few times through the front plexiglass door (which is now secured down). Each time that he's escaped, he's found a sheet of old leather in my closet and fell asleep in that. I thought since he likes it so much, I could put it in his enclosure. Would it be safe?

Re: Having leather in tank..

As there is little humidity in a milksnake cage i dont see it as a problem, just keep an eye on it thst it doesnt get dirty/mouldy

That old sheet of leather was somewhere dark, safe, and probably warm, which is likely the real reason you kept finding him there. It should be safe though to put it in his enclosure.

Re: Having leather in tank..

Alright thanks. There's loads of dark places in my closet to hide, the leather was actually sort of unhidden. I put it in his tank and he's constantly in it now, at least he likes it lol!

Re: Having leather in tank..

A lot of leathers are chemically tanned I'd be carefull. A lot of tanning chemicals are extremely acid and alkali. Don't know what it could do.

Re: Having leather in tank..

I used to use leather as a substrate for my leopard gecko's tank. Was very easy to keep clean and didn't have to worry about her ingesting it. (The leather, for any who would wonder, was free and was furniture grade. I worked for a furniture store once upon a time, and they were throwing out a pack of sample swatches.) Being that it was leo, the tank was an arid set up so I didn't have mold concerns.
