Safe soil mixes?

I was wondering what type of soil would be safe to use with some tropical plants in my tree frog setup. They will be in clay pots that are mainly buried in the rest of the substrate and the top of the soil covered with cypress mulch/moss.

There was a bag of soil where we got the plants that was all natural, but it has perlite mixed in with it. Would this be okay as it does not have anything else (like vermiculate)?

Thanks for any help

Matt

I dont now if yours is safe or not, but if your worried you can just cover the pot with moss or something.

Have no idea. But i personally supplement mine, and feed the crix really good so i doubt it, but there may be something that is missing.

pearlite is volcanic rock so its not good for them. not to mention since its rough it could shed there digestive system but i have no clue why they would eat it

i think they may mistake them for bugs. maybe powdered crickets but more likely those little white bugs that always invade the soil. When the redeyes are small they often go for those little bugs, and they may just think that the perlite is a bigger version. Just a guess.

Do not use perlite! If the frog eats it, the perlite will easily get stuck in his stomach or do something bad. try to avoid using it.

I don't know, but I did buy a couple of baby red-eyed tree frogs and I put in this expanding peat moss stuff at the pet store to make sure that they would stay moist and I lost them both. They died within the week. ;-( Someone told me that it was this bedding that I had used....the breeder I bought him from just shipped him to me without any instructions. I had read all about their care and needs, and had set up the tank ahead of time, so I had been a dilligent pet owner. But I had no way of knowing that this stuff could kill them. I was told to buy if for my green tree frogs. I got rid of that stuff and now have just the repti-bark, and I can't even say for sure if this would be safe for the red-eyed tree frogs. My green tree frogs don't seem to have a problem with it. I would like to get an adult green eyed tree frog....anyone have any advice as to were I can get one and what substrate is safe for them?

I doubt it was the soil. i use eco/coco earth, and have used peat moss with great succes. They are really sensitive frogs, and NEED dechlorinated water at ALL times, and should not come in contact with certain metals (and of course NO cleaning products). I'm guessing it was probbaly something along those lines that killed your babies.

I use Proper Vivarium soil from Vivarium Designs Iternational. They are based in BC.
