just get some limescale remover that you would use for bathroom tiles then water it down clean it off with a brillo pad or toothbrush, then run it threw away from your tanks, should be fine =]
Yes just remove the minerals. You have hard water. I have it too and need to clean my humidifier weekly.
I have never cleaned this part of the humidifier since I've had it. It must have built up. I've had it for over a year now. I'll check it every week or so.

yeah don't leave it that long mate, i live in the U.K and our water is probably worse for having hard water then you guys lol
After you scrape out the scale run the humidifier with water and vinegar to clean it. You should rinse the tank and machine weekly with either vinegar or bleach. Bacteria that builds in there can cause pneumonia in humans. I'm sure it's not good for the herps either.
