Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

I have attached a pic of my female Hog which shows wrinkles skin under her chin. I was just wondering what could be the cause of this?

My other boas look similar when they are due to shed, but she shed and it did not go away. She has been like this since I got her, I was expecting it to go when she shed, but guess not.

Humidity is steady ~70%, her shed was perfect and her skin is looking a lot better compared to when I got her, except for this wrinkle which concerns me.

Here is the pic, it is from when I got her, I tried to get a recent one but couldn't get a good angle to show the wrinkle. Maybe it isn't as bad now, but it is still quite noticeable.

Re: Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

i've definitey noticed this as well on my rosy boa from time to time, also more pronounced around the shed.
i'm not sure how long youve had her, but could it be sudden weight loss, or dehydration before you got her? maybe it will just take multiple sheds to get back to where she should be? or maybe she is just a jowl-y snake

Re: Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

Thanks for the reply, Starbuck.

I've had her just over a month now. And yes, I am assuming that she was kept very dry in her previous home, her viv was so dry, open screen top and she had was badly impacted. I am hoping that it will go with time, I just wanted to make sure it was not a sign of something. I have no idea about any weight loss before she came here.

I thought she might have been a bit chubby at first because she was so round, but looks like it was maybe because she was so huffy (I think they puff themselves up when they are scared, right?) because she has a more "square" shape to her now. So I am assuming that it's because she's calmed down a lot and doesn't huff and puff whenever she sees someone.

This was from a few days ago.

I don't know anything about the wrinkled skin so I dont really have much advice; except she looks a little chubby to me, maybe give her more excersise so she can tone up

Re: Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

i think it sounds like her body is just adjusting to her new home/habitat... and i dont think one month is an unreasonable length of time for that adjustment (and physical changes) to span. As long as you have a reliable way to measure and maintain the humidity, i'd just keep a photo log (as youve been doing), maybe once/week, to compare any changes.

as a sidenote, edema in other animals/mammals can indicate systemic illness, heart failure, and simply stress, among other things, though i DO NOT believe this is the case with your snake.

p.p.s. i didnt realize this was the same snake you posted about earlier r.e. the urate impaction; i think it could definitely be her body recovering form the stresses of the procedures and the impaction.

That's what I had thought, but she still had it there right after shedding...
Anyways, we'll see what happens after the next shed.

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

They have excess skin around their jaw for stretching and consuming prey items. While in shed its much more pronounced. Looking at the picture with most of the body showing, I think you got a heiffer there lol

Re: Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

I thought she seemed chubby too when I got her, but then the vet said she was good. I don't know what to think anymore, lol. She is 6ft 9lbs, what is usually the norm for these guys (if there is a norm)?? Anyways, we'll work on getting her into a better shape. Thanks.

Re: Wrinkled Skin Under Chin

I don't know what the norm is Hogg Island's, but I really like her yellow and grey coloration, I don't think I've seen one quite like that before, she's a cool looking boa.
