Feeding doubles?

Hello everyone. I hope you are all well. I've got a bit of a dilemma. My Cal King, Hannibal Caesar, is ready to move up from hoppers (7-8g) to mice weanlings (13-18g) but I still have about (15) hoppers left. He's roughly 90g and inhales the hoppers. Is it ok to just feed him doubles until we finish the last few hoppers? I plan on ordering more mice for both my snakes in the next few weeks but wanted to finish up what's in the freezer. I thought about saving the remaining hoppers for my MBK, Sasha Fierce, but she's still on fuzzies for at least another month maybe two. She's only 24g. Since I order my frozen feeders online I don't wan't to have to pay for shipping twice by ordering his weanlings now and placing another order in a few weeks after Sasha finishes up her last 5 fuzzies. Any thoughts? TIA

Re: Feeding doubles?

Its fine. When I was out of rat pups/large mice for my Cali king he gobbled down three hoppers and left about the same bulge as always, and ate the same thing a week later.

Awesome! Thanks Mikoh. I know people say it's best to avoid feeding doubles when possible and to just go with a larger sized single prey item but I have to finish up the existing supply. Thanks again.

I don't see any issues with it but to be honest I would just store the hoppers in the freezer and move up to the next size.

They will still be good for ages and you might need them when you get another lol.

Why would they say its best to avoid feeding doubles? It's not like a couple hoppers are going to be nutritionally deficient. Also since your Cali kings staple diet is made up of one appropriately sized meal, a few doubles here and there is just fine.

Re: Feeding doubles?

On another note. How often do you all feed your colubrids? I feed mine every 5-7 days. A fuzzy for my MBK and 2 hoppers or a weanling for my Cal King. This is right in line with the Munson feeding plan. Is this a good feeding schedule?

Re: Feeding doubles?

I only have 1 corn when I started feeding (He was already an adult) I fed every week but it didn't take long before I noticed poop every week and what I can only assume was fat under the jaw, I started feeding every 2 weeks he looks much healthier now and still poops on a regular basis. It also depends on food size.

Re: Feeding doubles?

I feed more than one prey item to my rats whenever they are ready to be bumped up and I don't have the next size on hand. I still feed my younger colubrids once a week then I will switch to every week and a half to two weeks. Haven't had an issue with this schedule and all my guys are doing fine.

Re: Feeding doubles?

I breed my own mice and rats, if I don't have the size I need I just give the snake a few smaller rats. I don't see what it would hurt?

Mark-Don't encourage me. I promised myself, and my girlfriend, no more snakes until we move next year.

Re: Feeding doubles?

Speaking of doubles, i think Medusa is ready for doubles. One hopper doesn't seem to be enough lol!
