July 4th Bx Zoo Reptile House Visit
Was at the Bronx Zoo with my 6 yr old and his 2 little cousins in the morning on the 4th this year and snapped a few cell phone shots. It was great as in empty. The animals were actually active and moving as opposed to hiding or napping as is typical during busy times with extra noise and obnoxious visitors glass tapping and waving at them. These are not great but here's a few.
This guy wouldn't stop moving. He's one of four May 2013 Merten's Water Monitors in the nursery. In the Fall they will be part of a new monitor themed exhibit in another area of the zoo(according to a keeper I spoke with).

The 2 big Burms were actually climbing all over the enclosure and each other.

After a couple of minutes, he or she either: 1) was warmed up. 2) got sick of me staring at it or 3) there was food beckoning behind the doggy door in the back corner where he/she retreated to.

Re: July 4th Bx Zoo Reptile House Visit
I'll end with what I believe is the famous escaped Egyptian Cobra from awhile back. They found it hiding in the building. It must be feeding day or something because this guy was checking out me, the doors to the enclosure, and everything else. There were other cool shots but the basking lights and angles the animals were at through the glass caused many to come out washed out. All in all a good day with kids and the animals do seem more relaxed and "natural" when the place is slow.

Yes they all had a good time. I just hope this new exhibit under construction featuring varanids will incorporate some of the more current husbandry practiced by Wayne, Crocdoc, etc.

Re: July 4th Bx Zoo Reptile House Visit
I've been dying to go back to the zoo, I haven't been there since I was a young kid. Never went after I got my license for some reason....and now I'm waiting for my family to get here so we can all go together. You got me all excited to see the mertens now. Nice pics , thanks for sharing them.
