Should I sex my snake?
Hey, everyone. I have never tried to sex a snake on my own, but I've seen people do it in person and on videos, and even how-to's on sexing snakes. Obviously that's a lot different than hands-on experience, but I really want to sex my new corn snake named 'Yeti' but I don't want to hurt it. I can take it to a place out in Tigard, Oregon that does it for free but I am about an hour a way from them in a car, and about 2 and a half hours away on a bus. So really... I could just wait awhile and try to find a ride. I am not going to do something that's potentially dangerous to my snake unless I get clearance from people who've actually done it. Btw, I know to look for hemipenes and all that good stuff, I am just scared to try it.

What do you have to benefit by knowing the sex?

I may want to breed at some point. I am just starting so no time soon, but eventually I may want to breed. Don't want to try and breed two females or two males LOL

It's also beneficial to know the sex of your snake in case you decide to sell it. I would definitely have it done by someone who is experienced in popping or probing, as sometimes inexperience in doing it can lead to false results or even damage to the animal.

That's exactly why I am scared to do it on my own. Where can I get experience/lessons on popping? I plan to breed my BP one day and many other reptiles, and popping is definitely something I am going to need to know how to do. I am 16 so I don't drive (neither does anyone in my family) so finding a ride every time I want to sex a snake is inconvenient for me, and the person who gives me a ride.

Re: Should I sex my snake?
You need someone to show you...and then for you to try it in person. It isn't too difficult but good to have an experienced hand so the animal doesn't get injured.

Re: Should I sex my snake?
In my personal opionon I wouldn't do it. There is no reason for it basically if ur not gonna breed right away. Maybe u can in a few years or so. If it does mean that much to u I would find a ride and get it done by a pro. But if I was u I would just pick a gender and call him/her that until breeding time came around. Enjoy your pet and don't risk hurting it for something that foesnt really mean that much in the long run

Idk when Corns hit sexual maturity but that would probably be a bad idea. No offense but you don't see corns around here a lot. Not even in pet stores. So trying to find another corn snake of the opposite gender once he/she is ready to breed would be hell. And IMO knowing the sex of your snake is a really big thing if you plan on breeding lol Again I mean no offense. I am just saying. I won't do it myself but I am surely going to get it done soon. I need to be prepared and I need to know what I am going to need in the future.

Re: Should I sex my snake?
I would wait until you really need to know. Popping is not as reliable as probing. If you pop a male it is definite, but if it pops a female, it maybe a female or you may have done it wrong. Probing is more accurate. But to probe you need to be taught how or you can hurt the snake. I have many people bring snakes to me to be sexed and the breeder had popped them wrong and they turned out to be opposite of what the person wanted. Also it is easier and safer to sex an adult than it is to sex a baby.

Well he's about three feet so I don't think he's even close to being a baby. I am going to bring him to a place out in Tigard, Oregon. The guys there are really trustworthy IMO and have had a lot of great things said about them. So when I can find a way out there, I will go. I wouldn't mind the two hour bus ride but that'd REALLY stress the little guy out + a car drives smoother, so I'll just keep begging friends who drive

This.
You don't even know what size to feed it. You need to slow down and learn the basics of animal husbandry.
Also popping is dangerous on adult snakes.

Learning the basics of animal husbandry is 30 minutes of research. Same with just about anything I need to know. And I know that popping any snake of any age/size is dangerous.

Really? So why don't you know the husbandry of your corn yet? Why do you keep asking basic questions when a thirty minute search would answer them?
Also popping a hatchling really isn't dangerous.

I have been asking questions because the site has been busy lately.
30 minutes of research or a couple minutes for a reply..
