Re: can anyone help out on morph
I'm torn... I'm really not convinced that's anything other than a really nice normal... it doesn't convince me that it's a granite 100%. Hopefully Mykee and some of our other members will chime in with their opinions too.

Re: can anyone help out on morph
I am guessing that it is a normal because I have seen quite a bit of Pastels and I don't think that that ball python is bright enough to be a Pastel. I am guessing that it is a Normal or a really weirdly coloured Granite because normally they have more "spots"

thanks for having a look, when i got it home and started to research it i kinda thought it wasnt a granite due to the fact its not got much speckles on the side, it has a fair bit of blushing which was leaning me to being pastelxnormal? im new to ball pythons so dont really know much about them yet, i just research all the time to try gain exp on them, which has me thinking if this bloke at the shop had my eyes out when i bought it

Re: can anyone help out on morph
That looks like a normal to me... The pastels I have seen are much lighter/brighter.
As I understand morph genetics, even if it had a pastel parent, if it is in fact a normal it doesn't carry the pastel gene and won't produce any pastel babies if bred to another normal looking animal. If one of the parents was a recessive morph like albino or pied, then a normal looking animal can carry the gene for that as a "het".
Hope that helps.

Re: can anyone help out on morph
In any case, if you don't plan on breeding, and simply want this snake as a pet, the morph doesn't really matter

Re: can anyone help out on morph
no that's not quite right. If this snakes parents were 1 normal and 1 pastel then the babies would "look" (homo) Normal but carry the gene (het) for pastel.
So your right that if this snake was normal het pastel, and bred to a normal, you would not get pastels. But if you breed that same snake to a pastel, you would get normals and pastels.

Re: can anyone help out on morph
Definitely not pastel or pastel related.
I'd call that a possible granite (dinker), wont know if its genetic until you prove him out by breeding, although there does seem to be the slightest amount of speckling.
If you haven't got plans for breeding, I wouldn't worry about it. Hes a VERY nice normal in the very worst case scenario.

The pastel mutation is a co-dom gene so there is no such thing as a het pastel. When you breed a pastel to a normal, the ratio for the clutch should be 50% pastels and 50% normals. The normal looking offspring are nothing more than just normals. The only way you got het anything is when a recessive mutation is involved.
You're right about if bred to a normal you'll only get normals and if bred to a pastel you'll get 50/50 pastel and normals. You just threw me off with the het pastel.

Re: can anyone help out on morph
Dang, beat me to it. No such thing as a het pastel.
As for the genetics of the OP's animal, looks totally normal to me, but who knows.
