Thanks Cayaln..Yes its my first clutch of bloods..the father was a breeding loan from a buddy of mine.A very dark male.

The debate between me and my better half is should she be left to incubate her self or not.

I have my own ideas on what I am going to do,but If any of my fellow keepers have opinions feel free..

Re: Just went downstairs and seen this!!

Trent! Congrats! And you need to get your butt up to Campbell River at some point to take a look at some of my sexy bloods! Had I have known you had a breeding loan I would have talked to you about loaning you my het albino boy!

I can tell you my plans for the season. I'm doing a 50/50. Borneos are going to be incubated by me and I'm going to let my blacks incubate maternally.

I always let my Spotted Pythons incubate maternally as well.

I really have no reason for my decisions though so as far as backing up my reasoning, sorry, ain't happening

Re: Just went downstairs and seen this!!

Congrats! I would incubate the eggs myself personally. You're better able to control the exact conditions they are under and as a result will likely have a better hatch success ratio.

How many eggs did she end up laying do you think?

Can't remember who, but we had a member on here do the incubate maternally thing last year and lost all the eggs. They were kicking themselves for not incubating in a incubator.

It's a tough call. I've only taken away eggs for incubation once and I hated myself more than the snake hated me for doing it. I'd *never* make it as a breeder, thank goodness, lol.

I am with you Todd..I would love to see her incubate, but I not willing to risk her health or the clutch.
So I had to take them from her..not fun

Re: Just went downstairs and seen this!!

Not easy making the hard decisions for our snakes, but lets face it... they are very headstrong and not always right. Having to go through a breeders perspective and my own at all times, it gets very conflicting. But I always do what I think is right for the snake, and so far that's led me the right way. To make it easier on you Todd(and Trent for that matter) taking the eggs away from them allows them to recover from the egg laying that much sooner, as well as not have to put any extra effort or work into keeping the eggs properly. Think of it as giving them a break if anything... Just because it looks like they are sitting still, they are still doing everything they can to regulate humidity and temperature for the eggs. Incubating the eggs ourselves and giving them an extra couple months of recovery time instead of 2 months more work, is definitely for their benefit, not our own.

Re: Just went downstairs and seen this!!

Just letting you folks know, and this might just be my weirdo snakes, but my girls eat while maternally incubating, I also closely monitor temps and humidity during the maternal process to make it easier on them.

One season my Spotted Python lost her clutch and I took the dead eggs out and she just went crazy. Constantly cruising her cage, not eating, and she was just under a lot of stress. I felt so bad.

and those are some of the reasons I choose to to take them from her.
That was always the plan..just asking to see what others thoughts are on the topic.

So just an update she had 12 eggs in total.
Managed not to get bitten removing the eggs which was a bonus!
