My Red-Eared and Yellow-Bellied Sliders(Pic Heavy)

I had the camera out today(8/18/2015) and took some pics of my sliders and thought I would share. These are also both rescues from people who no longer wanted them.

This Azura my female Red-Eared Slider.

Look at the nails on that boy! He could give the Wolverine a run for his money with those bad boys. Thanks for sharing

You're welcome. All the adult male RES and YBS have long fingernails like that. It makes them really easy to sex. Actually you can usually tell the difference at about 4 inches SCL(Straight Carapace Length). Also you can't tell in these pictures but the male has a longer much thicker tail with the vent well past the end of his shell. The female's tail is much shorter and thinner with the vent within, usually right at the edge of, the shell. The tail is the same with adult box turtles.

I knew about the tail thing, but not the claws. Pretty interesting, and these guys are always stealing my bait when I go fishing so I'll look for the claws next time I see some. Very nice photos

Thanks, I think they are pretty awesome too. Honestly I was happy to take them. I just wish I had more space so I could take in more. I see people giving them, mainly RES, away for free on craigslist all the time. It is quite saddening to me. People often buy them as babies not realizing they get 6-12 inches, depending on sex and of course like all animals varies from each different individual. Just like people who buy a baby Burmese python not realizing it gets 12-18 feet. When their quarter sized turtle gets the size of a diner plate, they get overwhelmed.
