Question Eastern Rat Snake hatchling tips/help

Hello! My name is Micah. I'm new to this forum so I hope I'm not posting in the wrong thread... If I am, excuse me for my ignorance.

Anyway , I am here to discuss a new baby of mine. My boyfriend found him on top of my car during a storm we encountered. My boyfriends curiosity got a hold of him and he brought him into the house and we have been taking care of him for two days now. I fed him (for the first time it seems.. he's very skinny and malnutritioned looking) a thawed out pinkie and he CHOWED down like he's never before. The only problem with this little baby, is the fact he's VERY VERY VERY feisty and snappy. I haven't ever dealt with this kind of thing before. I have two other snakes whom were CB and are already docile, very sweet and have never snapped or bitten towards me.

So, If you have any advice It would be GREATLY appreciated I will try and post a couple pictures of him if I get him out and about again. Hopefully I can dodge being bit. He hasn't bit me yet. Just very defensive in his cage. Is fine once I get him out.

Thank you very much!!

You can always release the snake. It will do just fine.

Re: Eastern Rat Snake hatchling tips/help

Hello SnakeladyMicah. Young Rat Snakes are often feisty. Personally I prefer a biter over a snake that is very flighty. It is much easier to work with a snake that wants to bite vs one constantly trying to escape. They do usually calm down quite a bit with age, though many will always be a bit cage defensive. If you are planning on keeping it be prepared to deal with a permanently cage defensive snake.

You have your location set as Dallas. If it was found in Dallas then it should be a Western Rat Snake, commonly known as a Texas Rat Snake. I'd love to see pictures of the little guy when you have time.

Re: Eastern Rat Snake hatchling tips/help

I this I posted the picture right. If not I'll attach it anyway! He looks more eastern to me. And sorry, this is the only picture I have of this little baby at the moment. I set my location to Dallas for privacy, My actual location is in between Greenville and Commerce, Texas. We live in the outskirts where the trees grow and the snakes thrive

thank you everyone! I'll keep you updated

I think we might name him Apex after my boyfriends E-liquid premium line.

p.s. He also has calmed down since we have found him. He's also fattened up.
