Re: Giant ancient city found underwater
Very interesting to think that our history may not be all that right. Looks like Graham Hancock might be onto something about ancient civilizations.
And for those who like to read, I recommend his books...very interesting stuff.

Checking to see if this is in the joke section...
I'm sure the Mormons have a lot of information to add on the subject. :-)

Re: Giant ancient city found underwater
unfortunately the story is not what it seems, the image they show, is a computer generated piece of art work, not an actual sonar image, there are sonar images of some interesting shapes, but nothing like as interesting as the CGI one - no one has yet confirmed either way, but many archaeologists and geologists believe the structures are more likley to be natural granite formations
various links can be found on the web which support both theories - but the image of the pyramids isnt a real ''photo'' or scan, either way
(story has been doing the rounds for at least 10 years now)

Re: Giant ancient city found underwater
I don't have a problem with people exploring alternative ideas about human history, but a lot of the "Experts" who peddle these theories are just hucksters. They don't evaluate their findings using the scientific method or any kind of logic. They have a certain world view and simply look for anything that they feel corroborates it. I haven't read Hancocks books but I have seen him on various programs and he seems to fit that model.

He does seem to make a good case for the Egyptian pyramids/sphinxes being older than they are thought to be in mainstream science. Something to do with rainfall erosion and how the last rainfall in Egypt was over 9,000(if I remember correctly) years ago.

Re: Giant ancient city found underwater
So this is what he had to say about this
"Yes I've seen the Bermuda triangle "Giant Pyramids and Sphinxes" story. I covered it extensively in my 2002 book Underworld. The graphic in the link is just that -- an imaginative graphic. But Weinzweig and Zelitsky did identify intriguing structural ruins at approx 2,000 feet depth off Cuba. Their initial video footage was to be followed up by National Geographic -- such work with RoV's is very expensive -- but it never happened. I don't know why. Could be the "ruins" are left overs from stuff dumped by the Russians during the Cuban missile crisis??? I will be trying to find out more about this, and why no more research has been done, during the coming year while I am researching and writing a sequel to my book "Fingerprints of the Gods"."

Re: Giant ancient city found underwater
him calling them ''ruins'' is pretty misleading, considering what evidence actual exists
as for left overs of the Cuban missile crisis...er...? I appreciated educated guesses when there is no other information, but he might aswell say its Noah's ark if he's going to go down that route

The problem with that perspective is that the erosion on the sphinx can be explained by natural process that are concordant with our understanding of Egyptian history. If the sphinx is over 9-12,000 years, why do all the Egyptian artifacts conform to the common scientific understanding of history? Most of the proponents for an alternative history of humanity aren't really looking for the truth. Rather than following scientific procedure, they come with a fully formed opinion of what happened. Then they look for any evidence that could possibly be seen as confirming their opinion. They ignore any information that contradicts their opinion and they never perform any tests or experiments. That's why their views are seen as pseudo-science by the scientific community.

Sounds like good evidence to me. Also I would say wind erosion is much more important in that region. Look at southern Utah for example.
