Like any other creature, they have their good and bad days. Sometimes when snakes settle in and establish the cage as their territory, they get more territorial and will defend it.

Yeah I've had a few others that have been this way, extremely calm at first then they "settle in". If Al Coritz says he's feisty I'll take his word for it!
