In a typical model you can program lights, day/night temps and humidity. They're supposed to be designed to provide uniform temps throughout the unit, but they're never that good. It might be a problem though to have a basking area and a cooler area, although I bet it's doable. I haven't used my temp gun in it to find out the temp range, but that's a good idea. You might be able to find some good equipment from a manufacturer to help your project along.
