They lose moisture throughout the day just moving around the enclosure (or basking).
Most Varanids "like" to swim or at least sit in water at times, and that isn`t just because they are dehydrated. Obviously if the animal is frequently taking drinks, and stays in the water container for long periods there may be something wrong with the conditions.
I don`t believe Wayne said his monitors never drink or bathe, just that he hadn`t actually seen them drinking, which obviously doesn`t mean they haven`t (unless he sits and watches them 24/7)!?
You must ALWAYS provide clean drinking water. They often defaecate in the water container, too.
Stefan is certainly right, I would never advocate anyone omitting the water bowl.

Even if they do just muddy it up, I see then roll in it and they do seem to enjoy the mud (Must be it resembles rainy season?) so I will always keep the water dish of some sort, need a bigger pan soon.

Yeah my guys seem to like to go in the water after coming out of the burrow to wash off the dirt and rub the dirt off. One of them is starting to stay in there longer than usual.. I'll have to observe a few more days... my humidity seems in check(actually went up quite a bit(mid 60% up to mid 70%) after replacing MVB with 3x50watt halogens, plus turning off ceramic emmiter during day time) So will see if the water soaking goes down,.
