I would love a black rat snake. But maybe it's just because I will never be able to own one unless I move.

Why are black rats outside your reach living in ottawa? As far as I know they aren't bylaw'd out.

They are native to Ontario and as far as I know they are a species at risk making it illegal (I'm not sure to what extent) to own in Ontario.

i cant find anything stopping it, it does say it is illegal to capture them in the wild, but i'd bet captive bred is probably fine. im still digging though

Thats my understanding, I had a few native thamnophis and neordia, they are totally legal as long as you dont get caught collecting them for your collection. You can buy them at expos, keep the info from the breeder you purchase them from and you're golden.

yeah it just makes too much sense, if its declining in the wild, why would you stop legal breeding in captivity to increase the population lol
