Something to think about. It's not natural to enjoy another creatures suffing? Why do so many Felines seem to enjoy playing with suffering prey in the wild? Where do you draw the line between insignificant life forms significant ones ? If a mosquito lands on you do you not swat it? If a mouse runs across your floor do you not try to step on it, or set traps to kill or possibly maim it?

I wasn't referring to animals when I said that it's not natural to enjoy other creature's suffering. I was referring to people. It is not natural for us to be like that.
Also, yes, I get your point. Yes, I probably would buy traps if a mouse was loose in my home. Not because I enjoy killing them but because they damage your belongings and pose a danger to you and your family.
(disease, fires caused by chewing wires, etc.) I would, however, buy traps that have the best success rate of killing an animal quickly and humanely. I am NOT a promoter of those glue traps that cause animals to suffer for hours or even days before they finally die from exhaustion or hunger. IMO they should be illegal.
Also, mosquitos are parasites that spread disease, and their bites cause allergic reactions, etc.
Now let me go to bed. I keep saying I'm going to bed then I hear the *bling* of another email notification on my tablet. Curiosity, I hate you!

I absolutely believe that humans naturally have a tendency to enjoy or be on some level excited by the suffering of others. Schadenfreude. I look at the famous tragic plays and operas, the sad country songs, the gossip magazines detailing the downward spiral of some troubled public figure and I can't deny it. Ever enjoy watching Simon Cowell crush some hopeful TV contestant? Ever felt smug at someone getting what you thought was coming to them? Ever enjoyed a bit of juicy gossip? Then you have taken pleasure in the suffering of others. (General you, by the way, not directed at RandyRhoads.)
At least the cats may only be doing something they enjoy and are indifferent to the suffering it causes.
I don't think the ability to show compassion separates us from other animals, either. I think dogs, elephants and gorillas are among the animals that can demonstrate a level of compassion and empathy. I'm sure there are more. It sounds anthropomorphic, and there may be more practical survival motivators at the base of it, but it is there.
As far as where the line is drawn, I couldn't begin to say because I don't think I'm very logical and consistent at drawing it for myself.

Excellent reply, I thuroughly enjoyed reading this. I am surely guilty of having taken pleasure at others misery just as you have described, as i'm sure most have as well. I get disgusted at horror movies and the people that can't wait to see them. I had an ex that absoultely loved seeing people get chopped up. It caused huge fights with almost every girlfriend/wife i've had, and many friends. Especially the real ones. Faces of Death, why are so many people getting off watching an innocent man get his head sawn off while still alive. As you said, everyone has that tendency no matter what the level is.
Compassion is what seperates us from the animals- So what about people that can't feel compassion, do we treat them as animals? Some people just CAN'T feel it. Born that way or having something else in their life effecting it, it happens. So do we sit here and flame them calling them disgusting, or treat them as a person with a mental defect that can't help it?
Lol, I have trouble being very logical and consistent in drawing mine, that's why I ask so many questions and throw obscure things out challenging people. I want to hear thought processes and challenge hypocrisy.
