literally heat vision, think predator movies or heat vision goggles (not literally that way, but basically)

they use it so they can recognize prey (which is why it helps to warm up frozen thawed a bit over room temp) and also why some snakes may mistake your hand for food if it smells like rodent, because its warm fleshy and smells like food.. so it must be!

No, they're the heat pits to sense heat. The nostrils are on top of his snout
