I don't think it is anything to worry about. Mine will go to ground from time to time. The most he has stayed there is about a week. What are you using for a perch? It may be that the perch you are using is not suitable, for whatever reason, to your GTP. It (the perch) may be too smooth or too rough. It may be irritating to the GTP's belly. Is it of appropriate size? Perch should be about the diameter of the thickest part of the snake.

Hi there, I'm a bit late to this thread...

My GTP is coming home soon, and for the last month I've read extensively about their needs, husbandry, etc. on several forums and all the care sheets I could find...

I noticed in your post you mentioned a "20 gallon tank" (guessing that's a glass open top fish tank?) and heat lamps.

From what I've read and heard recommended from quite a few breeders with a lot of experience this is not quite ideal. Most recommend a closed top enclosure with doors at the front. This will keep the heat and humidity in the enclosure, and aid in your ability to handle the animal - approach from above is trouble because your hand will be seen as a predator. If you enter from the front, remove the snake with the perch, then the animal can move onto you with much less stress and fear/aggression. Tangent there, but I guess it sorta applies..

For heat many people recommend radiant heat panels or flexwatt...but lamps and CHEs are used as well.

hi there reading all these answers some are right some are a no no you dont want a monsoon it will make the tank to wet also dont use a fogger because that dries the air. the best tank is a exo terra 60x60x45 this is a good size you just cover the mesh top with clear perspex leave one back corner for your heat emitter 100w will do that size tank or a reptile radiator that will do it better i keep mine temps at 82-84f no hotter they seem to eat better at that temp.And to get your humidity up i block the mesh top up then get some clay balls at the bottom for drainage/spangnum moss/live plants (ie look for none toxic plants) also ive put coco fibre sheets on the sides and the back of the of my exo terra thats all you have to do to keep the humidity in. this way it works a treat. put about 5 x perches in so your gtp will then find a spot that he/she will like. also the exo terra have a air strip below the doors that will give the right amount of air it needs. sorry the humidity wants be 90/80% when you spray your tank in a morning then leave to dry out till the next morning then this should read 60/50% then respray your tank again but if it stays at 80% next morning then you havernt got enough air and if it drys to quickly you have to much air you must get this right or you will have problems all the time get it right and you will have a good healthy gtp

In my opinion, Custom viv's are the way to go with a misting system, I built my custom enclosure for my GTP and he is always perched on one side or the other or in the middle, I will post up pictures in a few and you can check it out. I used heat cable under the spray foam in the bottom, it has a waterfall in it so I only have to spray once, it has spagnum moss on the bottom that I spray to help regulate humidity, 80% day, 50-60% night. There are ways to turn aquariums into nice vivs too just takes a little more work than a custom in my opinion, glass is very hard to keep heat in too. I use zoo med viv's for my atb's with the hood light and dome heat lamp and cardboard and tape to cover screen...works perfectly for them as well
