glass help

hey all, i got my aluminum tracks down and now im getting glass doors... they are .8'' wide and will each sit in a .25'' track.

my question is this....

how long should they overlap in the center? the cage its self is 47inches long and i was going to do 2 sheets of 30Lx17H glass, that would be like a 6 inch overlap of the glass (3 towards each side)

i hope this helps and you all can understand this.. also, should i use plexi for my beardie in case he smashes into it... he get a little crazy during feeding, the guy at ACE said it could possibly shatter???

jthanks for any help!

Re: glass help

I would go with a good plexi and over lap a few inches. Just realize that when you want to open 1 side of the glass the amount you over lap will be the amount you make the open side smaller. so if you Over lap 6" when you open the door the opening will be 6" smaller. I think 2-3 " is more than enough over lap.

ill go with a 2 inch overlap, would you say plexi for all cages, or just my beardie?

Re: glass help

I buy tempered glass at a glass dealer.

Tempered glass is super strong, does not get all scratched up like plexi, does not turn yellow with time, and is not overly expensive.

The glass I just got for Chompers new digs is so strong a large man can run into it and it will knock him out before it will break.

It's original use was to be a shower door, and we all know that shower doors have to be strong, since people can slip and fall in the shower rather easily.

Regular window glass is not the proper choice for reptile caging.

Re: glass help

I use Plexi for all my stuff because getting tempered glass in my area will run you at least double. If you can get tempered glass for a good price go for it, I know I would.

Re: glass help

In terms of the overlap - how are you locking the cage? I use jewelery cabinet locks and anything more then about 4inches would mean they wouldnt lock!

Tip.. Ask for a remenant or scrap/cancelled order.

Then tailor the cage to fit the glass.

It's a lot easier to cut wood than glass.

I never paid over $5 for tempered glass that way.

Thats a good Idea and I have tried but the few places around me only do it per special order and they do not accept returns..there for cancelling my chance at getting anything for a deal.

Re: glass help

Not many things go right the first time. Im glad you made it through your first build and are doing another 1. I love that I can make my animals homes the way I want and the best way to suit their needs.
