Talking Argentine Red Tegu

After 4 long years... I finally will have a tegu to call my own. I will be picking her up from her soon-to-be ex-owner on April 9th.

I'm so excited.

(These photos are the original owner's)

I've already bought her a month and a half's supply worth of extra-lean ground turkey, haha.

Re: Argentine Red Tegu

Welcome to the Tegu family!
http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/gener...-kimosabi.html

How old is your soon to be girl? How about length? What breeder did she come from?

More importantly, what kind of accommodations have you made for her, and what are your plans for an adult enclosure?
Be prepared for 20+ years of dedicated effort, although any and all effort you give will be generously rewarded by the best cold blooded pet in the world

Also, you say you already bought 1.5 months of turkey for her, is that all you plan to feed, or will you offer the recommended more balanced diet?

Re: Argentine Red Tegu

Holy canolie questions. lol

I've been preparing and researching tegus for about 3-4 years now. She's about 16" and almost a year now, I think. The owner mentioned her hibernating longer so she's a bit smaller. I don't know what breeder she came from. We can't get anything from Varnyard or other American breeders because we're in Canada.

I already have an enclosure set up for her and she'll be moved into roughly a 7'x3'x3' homemade enclosure sometime this summer.

I'm more than prepared for our long life together.

Turkey is just part of her diet. As I was shopping, I was noting how expensive the darned stuff was and then noticed it was on sale for a good price so I picked up a bunch. She'll be fed a varied diet of mice, chicks, various feeder insects and invertebrates, various raw meats, liver (if she'll eat it for me because she won't with her current owner), eggs, calcium rich fruits, vegetables and leafy greens. Not forgetting calcium supplementation as well.

Re: Argentine Red Tegu

Haha, too many questions?

16" would be VERY small for a year old Tegu, hibernation or not.My 7.5 month old B&W is almost 16" long, and he went through/is going through brumation/slow down.
Also, from the pics provided, she looks a bit bigger than 16", I would guess 20-24".

Glad you're planning on a large enclosure very soon! Although 3' wide is a little on the small side for width.

Great food variety you're planning! Here's my favorite care sheet, with a great food list:
Tegu Care Sheet -
Many young Tegu's are pretty picky eaters, mine is as well, but the more variance you offer the better.

Sounds like you've done your research, which is great! Enjoy your new friend!
