First think to do is dump that sand, Use cage carpet.. It's safe, reusable & it works excellently for a Leo.
Try handling the gecko and see how it behaves, if the poor thing freaks out, then take it easy.. If the gecko seems content with handling, then it will be fine to handle it.
Like any reptile, excessive handling is not something I recommend.
One of the things I like about roaches, they are silent.
If the climate is warm enough, there is no reason you cannot keep them outside, just avoid direct sunlight, they will bake in that critter box quick.
