Not all snakes dig, so you need some shelter with an opening.

And yes sawdust is really bad for any animal to live in and should not be used (not for reptiles, not for anything else either).

Re: new soil for my kingsnake?!

Aspen is dusty and doesn't hold moisture very well.
Cypress is good and it holds moisture fairly well.
Coconut husk is good and it holds moisture well.
A mixture of leaf matter, organic (no pesticides) mulch, clean fill (screened) dirt, works well.

Personally, I use Cypress for my Kings and Corn and they have a little bit of an issue when it's first put in, due to the higher moisture content, but once it dries out a bit, then can burrow rather easily. If you want to raise up the humidity, w/o using spagnum moss, for when the snake sheds, just pour in a bit of water--not too much mind you--to wet the cypress down.

A nice soil based mix. Soil, sand, Coco coir, leaf litter, maybe some gravel and orchid bark mix in for texture.

Proportions vary per species but mix something up until you have something you like the look of. Dear easy to do.
