Impaction is always the secondary cause of death. The initial cause for either the behaviour that caused the excess ingestion of substrate OR caused the hinderance of an animal's ability to pass a normal amount of ingested substrate/roughage is usually parasitic or husbandry related...impaction is the scapegoat of keeper error.
