poitash is a husky/retriever cross. My brother used to take him up the mountain when he was a younger pup, and said he kept up with the group wonderfully. And it's a wonderful cross with an AWESOME personality!!
Two of my three dogs, both my cats and two of my snakes are adopted/rescued. I'm definitely pro-rescue.
But I see no reason why someone shouldn't buy a pure-bred dog if that's what they want. My pure-bred golden retriever is my best friend and I wouldn't be without him for anything.
we're not saying don't get a pure bred!! Do you have any idea how many pure bred dogs are in shelters??? You would be AMAZED!! You can get ANY dog you want from a shelter, as long as you are willing to take the time to look.
The dogs at the breeders won't be killed if they are not adopted by a certain time, whereas the shelter dogs will be killed, pure bred or not!! So I always start at the shelters.
There is also a website called dogs in danger, which gives pics and descriptions of dogs in American shelters who already have a euthanization date applied to them. You can find ANY BREED on there!! and if your willing to pay breeder prices, there's the travel funds to get your new babe home from whatever shelter you find him/her in.
There is also a forum called "DOGSTER" which has a railroad, where volunteers relay the dog you've rescued to you!!
we tried to get a rescue for our last dog but were told we "didnt score enough points in their assessment".
We have two adults home all day every day, an enclosed garden, i used to volunteer for the rescue and walk their dogs on the weekends, we both have had dogs in our families all our lives and never had any issues with regard to them getting loose or being reported for bad behaviour etc.
Some rescue centres are a total waste of space!

yes, I agree. Many private rescues are run by hoarders (you know, no one can care for this dog like I can, even though I have 20 others!!) But there are alot of us who do private rescue who AREN'T like that!! You just go to another rescue if the first is acting all "holier than thou"
If you have knowledge of dogs and dog training, they make superb family pets. But you have to make sure they know you're the boss. And that's al down to proper training.

yea I have the 'boss' thing nailed when we moved my dog in with us he had a dominance issue where he was the boss and if you faced him when he was in trouble he wouldn't hesitate to show you teeth and snap. Now if he's in trouble and I walk up to him he lays down and rolls over on his side/back

That's the way it's got to be with a dog that,s so large and powerful. They're not for first time owners.

I TOTALLY agree, however, there are some breeds that are just not for first time owners!!
I'd go along with this. IMO Labradors make the best pets for family's.
