Housing: Arboreal Snake + Terrestrial Snake = ?
Some back info- I will be getting a HUGE 68" wide x 30" deep x 36" high enclosure soon. I will start my young snake(s) out in a 50gallon tank. I am setting it up all perfect before getting my snake(s) at the end of the summer. I have done hours upon hours of research and have decided for sure on a bredli/coastal/jungle python (will be going to an expo and picking up one of these species, whichever I fall in love with while there). I most definitely want one of these three species, as one of my top criteria for the snake I am getting is that is has to be pretty arboreal and make a good display snake- I've heard many carpets and bredli/centralians rarely ever leave their branches.
On the other hand, I LOVE BOAS. I am in love with the hog island boa- it is beautiful and a very perfect size. But it hides and does not tend to climb and would not make much of a display snake at all, defeating the purpose of spending all this time/money on a beautiful display for a snake that never shows itself.
The pythons and the hog island both require very similar husbandry and get to very similar sizes. I will have such a huge tank available once they are large enough to be comfortable in it. The pythons tend to stay up in the branches and the boa tends to stay on the floor and hidden. I realize snakes are not social creatures but I also know there are definitely possibilities for caging them together- for example, I know somebody who has a rainbow boa (stays more on the ground) caged with a tree python/boa (stays up high- forgot what specific species)- she says that since they tend to stay on opposite parts of the enclosure and have identical husbandry and she feeds them separately, it works out.
FINALLY- I would just love opinions! Another idea would be- would it be possible for me to just put a divider in the middle of the large tank and have a snake on each side, or would the enclosures then be too small? I realize this is a controversial topic- no angry peoples please

I don't advise you housing them together. Why risk it? Most keepers don't even house 2 of the same species together.

Agree with smy and would say think about a divider of some sort to make 2 tanks out of the one maybe?

I didn't suggest that because 30 something inches wide for each by 30 high or whatever is the size of 2 x 29 gallon highs about. And a 29 gallon high is small in my opinion.

True. Sounds like it's just a nice big home for one then.

Re: Housing: Arboreal Snake + Terrestrial Snake = ?
Was just an idea. I'm just so stuck between the two and really don't want to make a choice between them. It's not about laziness or money issues, and I'm very adamant about treating my animals right. Just got excited by the idea after I talked to the woman with the rainbow boa and tree python/boa together. Being a college student I simply don't have the room and can't allow myself two entire setups- already have a large bird cage and two parrots. I'll probably just get the Hog Island in a few years when I've got more stability.
Anywho, thanks for the input.

With that size tank i wuld go ofr a carpet python as i personally think it would use more of the space provided compared to the boa. Get another tank and then you can have both

This girl is 6.5' in a 5'x2.5'x2.5'. She climbs all of the time.

Woww, I'm confused, there are two very different sized snakes in there but the albino almost looks plastic....lol.
Where did you get the rock ledges?!!! I have been searching for ones like that that will be able to hold some weight..

That's my female albino het snow and my male ghost het moonglow. I set that cage up for the breeding season. I have a link to the company in another thread. I'll try and find it.

Dividing this enclosure in half would give the OP two enclosures measuring 34" x 30" x 36". Hardly the size of a 29 gallon.
While that would make two decent sized enclosure for something like a GTP or ETB, for a carpet I'd still recommend just keeping it as is without the divider.

Yea my bad, the length is what I was referring to, 30 , 34 close enough. Seems closer to 60 something gallons or more now.

I put those measurements in the calculator and here is what it said:
Your tank's volume is approximately 36,720.0 cubic inches or 159.0 U.S. gallons
