feeding issues

Ok I'm convinced Puja's new shedding problem is related to how she's eating now. I've never had constant major shedding problems with my red-tails but Puja is abt 2 and started eating 2 twice a week instead of 3 once a week. Does anyone else find the bulging necessary to help with shedding?? Cuz now she can't shed properly. Pobrecita. Also I've never fed non-live but now that I live in ny breeding her food would be messy and I wonder if these frozen mice can be (?) dried of natural oils maybe?? Ughb please give me all ur thoughts thanx

Shedding problems have nothing to do with eating. It all has to do with proper humidity mainly and heat of course. What temps are you using, what is your humidity like etc? Post those and we can help better.

as said bad shedding is mostly a humidity or heat issue

feeding 2 or 3 prey items per week,is an awfull lot of feeding mate

can you post pictures of your snake ?

If Puja is a 2 yo redtail then the reason it's eating mice twice a week is because it's hungry. At 2 it should be eating medium sized frozen rats. Also Slcburm is right shedding problems are the result of either improper husbandry, parasites, injury, stress or a combination of these. We need to know more about how you're keeping this animal in order to help you fix the problem. Also to answer your question frozen rodents are perfectly nutritious and safer to feed than live. They are highly recommended by many keepers out there.

What type of enclosure are you using? If its a tank with a screen lid mist the tank daily and keep a damp towel over the top will keep the humidity in! As for feeding please try to switch to rats asap a snake that size can not flourish on little mice every week! Good luck post some pics soon!

If you would provide pictures of the snake, the enclosure, the temps & humidity inside the enclosure, and how you're measuring these things, it would be much easier for everyone to help you out...

Thanks Slick Shauny & Wild...yea I will try to get some pics up once her new enclosure arrives. She's a rescue I've only had her abt 2 months. The age is a guestimate and I'm already aware of the humidity issues with the shed (lol thanks anyway...uh yeah & I'm aware rats would be better but actually I was happy the trouble she has takking them right now...She's just learning to take from the head and use her body muscles I'm not sure of how the people I took her from had her confined but she wasn't ok when I got her...she's recovering though and she's NoT my first rescue. Literally the shedding problem is a step in reverse from, I guess our first month together. And I have mixed feelings abt these frozen food. So I needed to check on that. Thanks fer ur opinions guys I can handle the rest :-)

imo frozen food is just as nutritional as live mate

i feel it's safer to feed frozen thawed,as theres NO chance of a snake being bitten by prey,a large rat can do a bit of damage with a bite

i have no issues with people feeding live

Thanks Shauny. I do appreciate ur feedback. I'm definitely switching her food up soon. And ur right abt bites...that's one issue of live feeding I don't miss...this snake would have a hard time with live mice anyway I'm pretty sure. But yeah were not all set up perfect yet, but I'm not an idiot either. I've got over 20 yrs with exotics and domestics. So thanks to u for being cool in ur responses lol.

imo we have a group of good people on here,a good few of them even gave me back some faith in humanity

i'm sure you'll like it on here once you get to know everyone.....

most forum members on here are very,helpful,decent,knowledgeable,human beings

we also have a very broad knowledge range,as the folk on here keep a very varied bunch of reptiles,we have keepers ranging from,newbies right up to,more than 30 plus years of hands on experience.....

so were all on a learning curve and learn from each other sharing our mistakes as well as our successes

re mistakes
imo the one thing this forum HAS GOT,over ALL the other forums,is.....

NO ONE gets flamed on here,we post our mistakes,then we discuss them and LEARN from them,imo this also gives remedies to each others problems

we also have some unique members.....

who some folk take a little time getting used to.. ...people..you know who you are
