ice storms how to deal ?

one is headed this way in eastern new york. i was thinking about my snakes. if the power goes out would it be alright do you think to boil some water with sterno put it in soda bottles and place them in their enclosures for warmth. we do the reverse of this for our pet guinea pig during the hot summer days.we freeze water for him in a bottle and he lies next to it. any comments on this? or other ideas.

that should help. some another idea is to get a kerosene heater or some other non electric heater. We have a couple heating pads to hook up to an inverter (changes dc to ac) to put in a couple coolers and a coolatron to hook up via the dc outlet in a vehical or to a 12volt battery. Of course you put the snakes in snake bags and then into the coolers with the lids slightly open.

Don't actually put boiling water in the bottles though. That's too hot. Get it so that you can hold the pop bottle in your hands without it burning.

i boil my water before i put my mice in it first and then let it cool to wher ei can hold the glas so as the prey isn't too hot. so i guess I'lldo that. or just pay attention to how hot it gets ha. hmm pop bottle that sounds even etter . i was thinking 2 liter soda bottles but yeah pop bottles sound better especialy since i can get them dirt cheapfrom work. thanks all.

Pop bottles are GREAT heat sinks and depending on the temperatures and your substrate and your cage insulation, they can last up to 6 hours before they need to be changed. By that time, power is usually restore around here.

Buy a gasoline generator... They may be noisy but they can power your whole herp room the same way its being powered when the electricity is on. Just fire it up and plug everything in. I would suggest running the generator in the garage and running extension cords or at outside somewhere because of the fumes!

I have a 4600 watt generator for the herps and an inverter for the incubators. I haven't had to use the generators for my herps as the power has never gone out for more than 6 hours. The incubator is the important thing and at 30 and 50 watts they don't need much energy to run.......so the inverter lasts a long time with them.

Corey
P.S. That is the nice thing about the winter time as the boids are cooling anyways so a little dip in temp (not below 68F) won't hurt them for short periods of time (less than 12 hours).
