Alligators temperment

I have 1.1 American Alligators(A. M.) and I tell ya..These little guys are too funny...bark like dogs(ally bark/grunt) when I come in the room..jump and swim round when they are excited, eat from my hand(for now.lol) and are smart as whips....I was feeding them and I closed the enclosure front to get more food and when I turned back around the male had pushed he slider open and barked at me while standing on his tail and holding on to the enclosure lip..it was amazing...needless to say, I will be changing the enclosure front sliders.

Yes charlie, i will have to agree with you there they are smart as whips they know who the person is who feeds them. As when i enter our living room they will climb out on there logs and rocks and do their little grunts/barks until i walk over. Mine also like to take the food right from my hands and if you hold onto the food when they grab it they will do the death roll..Awesome to see!

very smart and funny like clowns. 2 of my 3 are pretty tame and 1 hase never tryed to bite. They are the best species of all exept for their size.

A question for you guys with American aligators,
I've always wanted to get a couple but how big of an encloser do you need? I've always assumed it was way more than I could give them. What do you keep yours in? Also, I've worried about them getting to big, what then?....thanks

Ya the American Alligators do get very big..females 10ft and males 13-16ft., but they are the most mellow of the Crocodillians. I am building a pen for them in the spring that will last for 4-5 yrs since they grow about a foot a year...and after that .????

we will be doing a similar method room sized enclosures for ours. and then when and if they too big for that it is time to build a new facility specially designed for them.

Not to rag on your guys but shouldn't you have that stuff already figured out? I mean the main reason I've never considered a gator or croc of any kind, even a dwarf, is because I have no idea what to do with them when they get to full size. 6 feet of croc, even for a dwarf, is much mroe then I would be willing to handle let alone 10 ft of gator. I figured anyone who had one of these would already have long term plans for what to do with something that is going to get that big.
